เมื่อวันที่ 2 มีนาคม 2563 นายวิชัย โภชนกิจ อธิบดีกรมการค้าภายใน เปิดเผยว่า จากปัญหาหน้ากากอนามัยขาดแคลน ซึ่งเกิดจากความตื่นตระหนกของผู้ที่ต้องการป้องกันความเสี่ยงจากไวรัสโควิด-19 ในขณะที่โรงงานในประเทศมีกำลังการผลิตที่จำกัด 1,350,000 ชิ้นต่อวัน ประกอบกับปัญหาวัตถุดิบที่ใช้ในการผลิตเริ่มขาดแคลนและหายาก กระทรวงพาณิชย์ โดยกรมการค้าภายในได้รับมอบหมายให้จัดระเบียบให้โรงงานผลิตกระจายหน้ากาก โดยแบ่งเป็น 2 ส่วนคือจัดสรรให้กระทรวงพาณิชย์และกระทรวงสาธารณสุข รวมวันละ 600,000 ชิ้น โดยให้บุคลากรทางการแพทย์ 350,000 ชิ้น ผ่านโรงพยาบาลโดยตรง 150,000 ชิ้น ผ่านองค์การเภสัชกรรม 200,000 ชิ้น และส่งมาที่กรมการค้าภายใน 250,000 ชิ้น เพื่อกระจายไปยังสมาคมร้านขายยา การบินไทย ร้านธงฟ้า เซเว่นอีเลฟเว่น แฟมิลี่มาร์ท บิ๊กซี เทสโก้โลตัส
